UNIÃO DA MOCIDADE

União da Mocidade (Union of Youth) is, to our knowledge, the only youth bateria in the U.K to play Rio style samba - the carnival music of Rio de Janeiro's 'Escolas do Samba (Samba schools).

Its aim is to unite young people from all over London through music and dance, by creating inspiring workshop and performance opportunities. In demanding commitment and high standards of teaching and learning it promotes high levels of achievement, and encourages students to take pride in their abilities and attainments.

The students involved in this project come from schools across London and from a wide range of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. IN 2003-4 approximately 100 young people (aged 11-19) participated in workshops at 7 schools and colleges across London:

Pimlico School SW1 -Westminster
Park High School Harrow
Whitmore High School Harrow
Highgate School N4 - Haringey
Weekend Arts College NW3 - Camden
Ealing, Hammersmith & West London College W14 - Hammersmith and Fulham
Hatch End High School Harrow

2003-2004 performances:

The Brighton Samba Samba Encounter Rhythmsticks Festival, South Bank Centre
International Co-Operative Day, Coin St Fruitstock, Regent's Park
Lord Mayor's Respect Festival, Victoria Park

If you saw us at any of these events we'd really appreciate your feedback! Please contact us and tell us what you thought.

The 2003-04 season was kindly supported by Innocent Drinks and Hatch End High School
