Joe Bentley was born in London in 1975 and brought up in the East End where his first musical experiences were on the piano and playing drums for the his primary school's steel band. At secondary school, Joe took up trombone but, despite listening to jazz, funk and soul throughout his teens, it wasn't until he was studying for A-levels that he began to play in non-classical settings and to attend the Weekend Arts College's jazz workshops.

Joe's interest in playing continued during four years at Edinburgh University, where he studied English literature before returning to London to live and work.

As a trombonist Joe has performed and recorded with a wide range of London's creative talent, including Synergy, Polar Bear, Eska Mtungwazi, Bembe Segue, 2 Banks of Four, Chartwell Dutiro and Menlo Park.

Joe concurrently sustains a thriving non-musical career. As a web editor and producer he has worked for BBC1, Channel 4 and Carlton Television, where he produced the BAFTA-winning website for Starfinder, a reality gameshow for children. Today he works part-time as Research Manager for the hub, an east London-based arts development consultancy. Joe also serves as a member of the F-IRE board.
