F-IRE:WORKS vol 2 | PRESS

from www.bbc.co.uk 20 October 2005

Jazz. (Not so) nice.

If you fancy a bit of jazz in your life now and then - not jazzy hip-hop, jazzy drum’n’bass, smooth jazz or even dinner jazz, but proper, grown-up jazz-is-an-attitude type jazz – then this comp from London’s F-IRE Collective is a good toe-dipper. The double-CD package features dark smokiness from Seb Rochford’s Mercury-nominated Polar Bear, frenzied squalls from Acoustic Ladyland, Afro-Cuban drums from Méta Méta and electronic splatters from Tom Arthurs and Leaf Cutter John. It all makes for a forward-looking listen. Just don’t use it as the backdrop for your candlelit dinner.
