9 February 2007 BASQUIAT STRINGS with Seb Rochford THE achievement of Basquiat Strings is to combine the colours and tones of Bartok with the buzz and fire of jazz. The music is structured in layers, with a keening soloist - often mainman Ben Davis on cello - floating on top of a bed of springy pizzicato riffs or shimmering bowed strings. The mounting drama and daredevil spirit affiliate it to jazz rather than classical, even without Seb Rochford's deft drumwork. The end result is exhilarating: imagine a gut-strung Weather Report.
